FlexPON
What is FlexPON? Next-Gen Passive Optical Network Technology Explained
FlexPON is a next-generation passive optical network (PON) technology that offers service providers more flexibility and efficiency when deploying and managing fiber networks. Developed in response to the growing demand for bandwidth, faster speeds, and better network management, FlexPON introduces several key advantages:
Key Benefits of FlexPON
- Speed Flexibility: Service providers can customize bandwidth for different customers and applications, offering tailored plans for different market segments.
- Wavelength Flexibility: Multiple wavelengths are supported, allowing simultaneous services like internet, IPTV, and VoIP over a single fiber.
- Lower Operational Costs: More efficient network management and flexible deployment reduce infrastructure and operational costs.
- Improved Spectrum Efficiency: Optimized use of available spectrum results in higher capacity and faster data transfer rates.
- Future-Proof Design: Built to support future upgrades without requiring major infrastructure changes.

FlexPON Ports and Licensing
FlexPON ports support various SFP types — from GPON to GPON/XGS-PON Combo SFP+. Licensing via RTU (Right-to-Use) allows gradual activation of advanced services as needed.
GPON Mode
- GPON SFP – Use with GPON licenses
- Combo SFP – Requires GPON licenses, XGS-PON is disabled but ready for future upgrades
Combo Mode
- Combo SFP – Requires GPON licenses and RTU 10G licenses for XGS-PON functionality
Example Scenario
Using 8 XGS-PON Combo SFPs:
- 4 run GPON only → Require 4 GPON licenses
- 4 run both GPON and XGS-PON → Require 4 GPON + 4 XGS-PON RTU licenses
Total: 8 GPON + 4 XGS-PON licenses
