Optical data and power in a single hybrid cable
PoF simplifies the connection of ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi access points and other remote devices. The optical fibre carries data, while copper conductors in the same cable provide centralised power.
How PoF works
PoF combines the high transmission capacity of optical fibre with practical power delivery to the end device from one central location.
Two media in one jacket
Optical fibre carries network data without electromagnetic interference. A copper pair delivers DC power to equipment installed, for example, on a ceiling, in a corridor or in a technically difficult-to-access location.
Power does not travel through the optical fibre
In this solution, data and power are carried together in a hybrid optical-electrical cable. Electrical power flows through the copper conductors, not through the fibre itself.
Simple topology
Power is centralised at the active PoF splitter. Only a single hybrid cable then runs to the end device.
PON network
Optical connectivity from the central infrastructure.
Active PoF splitter
Splits the optical signal and adds power to each branch.
Ceiling Wi-Fi / ONU
Receives data and power without a local outlet or copper Ethernet cabling.
Key PoF benefits
The solution is particularly suitable where installing separate mains power or copper data cabling would be difficult.
Simpler installation
A single cable route replaces separate fibre, Ethernet and power cabling to the endpoint.
Centralised power
Power supplies can be located in a technical room, backed up by a UPS and serviced more easily.
Interference-resistant data transmission
Optical fibre is immune to electromagnetic interference and can overcome the distance limits of conventional Ethernet.
Cleaner topology
Fewer cables and power adapters simplify design, installation and ongoing infrastructure management.
Always verify the length against device power consumption
For a cable with 2 × 0.30 mm² copper conductors, 48 V power and an end device with a maximum power consumption of approximately 12 W, we recommend designing each branch for up to 300 metres.
Higher power consumption, temperature, joints or a shared power supply can reduce the safe reach. The final design must therefore account for voltage drop and the total power budget.

* The recommended value applies to a cable with 2 × 0.30 mm² conductors, 48 V central power and a device with a maximum power consumption of approximately 12 W. The actual reach must be confirmed by calculation for the selected cabling, power supply and end device.
