OLT - Optical Line Terminals
OLT units – the heart of your optical network
Optical Line Terminals (OLT) are a key element of any optical PON network. They ensure signal distribution from a central point (e.g. a PBX or server room) to ONT end units at customers. We offer OLT units for GPON, XG-PON and XGS-PON technologies from Huawei and V-Solution (V-SOL) for operators of all sizes. You will find 1U compact devices suitable for smaller installations as well as chassis systems for large optical networks with high port density. There are units with 4, 8, 16 or more PON ports, management via CLI, SNMP or web, and AC/DC power support.

What is OLT?
An OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is an active device in an optical network that controls communication between a central point (e.g. a data center) and ONT end units.
What is the difference between GPON and XGS-PON OLT?
GPON OLT supports speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps (downstream), while XGS-PON OLT handles up to 10 Gbps symmetrically. The XGS-PON is more suitable for enterprise and more demanding applications.
How big a network can one OLT unit serve?
It depends on the number of PON ports and splits (split ratio). For example, an 8-port GPON OLT with a ratio of 1:128 can serve up to 1024 end users.
Is it possible to combine GPON and XGS-PON in one network?
Yes, the so-called Combo PON ports allow GPON and XGS-PON to operate simultaneously. They allow for gradual upgrades without having to change the entire infrastructure.
What management do OLT units support?
Most OLT offers CLI (command line), web interface and SNMP. Both VSOL and Huawei offer their own Cloud management.
Can I power the OLT with a DC power supply?
Yes, some OLTs have redundant power supplies and support both AC and -48V DC inputs – ideal for operation in rack server rooms.
Do I need SFP modules for each OLT unit?
Yes, optical PON ports use special SFP or SFP+ transceivers (e.g. GPON OLT SFP). Some models already have them integrated, others require a separate purchase.
How does the configuration of a new OLT unit work?
By default, via CLI, but some models also have a simple web interface. We offer basic settings and complete pre-configuration according to requirements.
Is it possible to provide IPTV or VoIP via OLT?
Yes, modern OLTs support IGMP Snooping for IPTV and VLAN segmentation for VoIP. Suitable for triple-play services.
How long can the distance be between OLT and ONT?
In GPON networks, the maximum recommended distance is about 20 km, for XGS-PON up to 40 km, depending on the quality of the route and the optical budget.
